How the Fronius GEN24 Plus works
You can install it with solar only now and add a compatible battery later without replacing the inverter.
It comes in two shapes: the single-phase Primo, from 3 to 10 kW, and the three-phase Symo, from 3 to 12 kW. Both have 2 MPPT trackers and accept a wide DC input range, which gives you flexibility with how the array is split across roof faces. The SC (Superior Current) version of the GEN24 Plus takes a higher PV input current, so it suits larger arrays or panels with higher short-circuit current.
For backup, every GEN24 Plus includes PV Point: a dedicated socket on the inverter that delivers up to 3 kW straight from solar when the grid is out, with no battery required. Add a compatible battery and an external contactor and most models also support Full Backup, which powers your home’s wired circuits during an outage. Monitoring is through the Fronius Solar.web app, which shows generation, consumption and battery state.
Which GEN24 Plus suits your home
Start with your supply. If your home is single phase, you need a Primo; if it’s three phase, you need a Symo. We confirm this at the switchboard check.
For example, a single-phase Perth home putting a 10 kW array on the roof would pair with a Primo GEN24 Plus 8.0, which allows up to 10.64 kW of panels. If you’re planning a very large array, or panels with high short-circuit current, the SC version lets you push more current through the same frame.
Backup is the next decision. If you want basic cover for a fridge, lights and phone charging during daytime outages and no battery, PV Point is included on every model and needs no extra hardware beyond the socket. If you want the whole home (or selected circuits) to keep running from a battery day and night, you need Full Backup, which rules out the Symo 3.0 to 5.0 Plus. On a three-phase home, that pushes the minimum size up to the Symo 6.0 Plus.

What installation involves
Site assessment
We visit the property and inspect the existing solar system, the switchboard and the proposed location. We then recommend a capacity and a spot that stays accessible and within the manufacturer temperature guidelines.
Compatibility check
We check whether the existing inverter can work with a battery directly or whether a change is needed. You receive a clear outline of the components and how they work together before any work begins.
Choose your backup wiring
Backup means wiring selected circuits, such as the fridge, lighting and internet, to the battery. You choose between essential circuits only and a wider set. What stays powered, and for how long, depends on battery capacity and wiring.
Installation day
Technicians mount the unit in a shaded, ventilated position, install isolators and route the cabling between the array, inverter, battery and switchboard. Every connection is tested before commissioning begins.
Network approval
The installation is documented and connected to meet Australian standards and the requirements of Western Power, with Synergy as the energy retailer. Isolators, testing and documentation are provided for meter approval.
Commissioning and testing
Commissioning is done to the relevant Australian standards, which for home batteries includes AS/NZS 5139. We configure the charge and discharge settings, connect monitoring and confirm the system stores and releases energy correctly.
For how this kind of job is planned, wired and commissioned, see our inverter installation service.
Things to know before you buy
Pros
PV Point gives you a 3 kW backup socket straight from solar, and Full Backup powers the home from a battery once one is added.
Suits large arrays. The SC version handles higher PV input current, giving you more room to oversize the solar array without a bigger inverter frame.
Integrated arc fault protection. The built-in Fronius Arc Guard (AFCI) continually monitors the DC side for arc faults.
Outdoor rated. IP66 means it can be mounted on a shaded outside wall if there’s no suitable spot in the garage.
Things to consider
Full Backup isn’t available on every model. The three-phase Symo GEN24 3.0 to 5.0 Plus can only do PV Point, not whole-home Full Backup. If you have three-phase power and want the home to keep running from a battery, go with a 6 kW or larger Symo.
Full Backup needs extra hardware. Whole-home backup requires a battery and an external backup contactor wired in at the switchboard. Decide this at quote stage, because it affects the wiring plan.
PV Point only runs while the sun is up. The 3 kW socket draws from the panels, not from any battery, so it won’t help you overnight or on a dark, overcast day. If you want overnight backup, you need a battery and a model that supports Full Backup.
Battery compatibility must be checked. Fronius maintains a compatibility list, and not every battery on the market will work. We confirm your chosen battery against Fronius’s current documentation before you sign.
Fronius doesn’t publish the warranty term on its Australian product page. We confirm the current warranty terms in writing at quote stage. Any support claim goes through us as your installer.
Fronius GEN24 Plus questions Perth homeowners ask
What is the difference between Fronius GEN24 and GEN24 Plus?
The GEN24 Plus is the hybrid version of the GEN24 family: it has the electronics and battery interface to add a battery now or later and to provide backup power. A standard GEN24 is a grid-tied solar inverter without those hybrid features.
Does the Fronius GEN24 Plus provide backup power during a blackout?
PV Point supplies up to 3 kW through a dedicated socket straight from solar, without needing a battery. Full Backup powers the home’s wired circuits from a battery through an external contactor, on models that support it.
What battery works with the Fronius GEN24 Plus?
The GEN24 Plus SC pairs with the Fronius Reserva battery as a matched Fronius system. Several third-party batteries are also compatible, and we confirm the exact model against Fronius’s current compatibility list before you commit.
What kW sizes does the Fronius GEN24 Plus come in?
The single-phase Primo GEN24 Plus runs from 3 to 10 kW, and the three-phase Symo GEN24 Plus runs from 3 to 12 kW. We match the size to your solar array and your household’s load.
What is PV Point on a Fronius inverter?
PV Point is Fronius’s basic backup feature: a dedicated socket on the inverter that delivers up to 3 kW directly from the solar panels when the grid is out. It only runs while the sun is shining and doesn’t require a battery.
