How the GoodWe ESA works
The ESA bundles the hybrid inverter, the battery modules and the energy management into a single outdoor-rated cabinet (IP66). The power module sits on top; the battery modules stack beneath it. The cells are lithium iron phosphate (LFP), which is the chemistry used across most current home batteries for its thermal stability and long cycle life. Integrated remote shutdown is built in.
First, phase: single-phase ESA power modules run from 3.0 to 9.999 kW rated AC output, and three-phase power modules run from 5 to 29.999 kW. Second, coupling: the hybrid version replaces (or acts as) your solar inverter and manages PV directly, while the AC-coupled version is designed to add storage to an existing solar system without changing the inverter you already have. Both versions deliver whole-home backup with switchover under 4 ms.

Which GoodWe ESA suits your home
Start with your overnight consumption, because that is the gap the battery fills. Your Synergy bill or app will show it. Then add some margin for cloudy days and anything you plan to add later, such as an EV charger or a pool pump.
Single-phase or three-phase. If your home is single-phase, choose a single-phase ESA power module sized to your solar array and backup needs: 3.0 to 9.999 kW rated AC, with backup output to match (3.0 to 10.0 kVA). If your home is three-phase, or you have a larger PV array or three-phase appliances you want supported in a blackout, choose the three-phase ESA, which goes from 5 kW up to 29.999 kW rated AC. The three-phase version also supports up to 200% DC oversizing and AC backup overload, which gives more headroom for a big array and short-duration motor loads.
Hybrid or AC-coupled. If you’re putting in solar and a battery together, the hybrid ESA is the simpler build. If you have working solar already, the AC-coupled ESA sits alongside it and keeps your existing inverter in place.
How many battery modules. On single-phase, modules come in 5 kWh (5.12 kWh rated, 98% DOD) and 8 kWh (8.32 kWh rated, 96% DOD) and can be mixed in one stack up to 54 kWh. For example, a Perth home using around 12 kWh overnight would be well covered by two 8 kWh modules (16.64 kWh rated), with headroom for a cloudy day. On three-phase, you have four module sizes (5, 6, 8 and 9 kWh) and can go up to 12 modules per stack for 108 kWh total.
Backup scope. If you want the whole home to stay on during a blackout, the single-phase ESA supports up to 63 A whole-home backup without a separate gateway, and the three-phase version uses a dual-port design with an 80 A bypass. If you only need essential circuits (fridge, lights, a few power points), we wire a smaller backup subboard, which is simpler and often cheaper.
Rebate sweet spot. The WA rebate scales with usable capacity between 5 and 10 kWh usable; any stack of 10 kWh usable or more receives the maximum of about $1,300.

Rebates on a GoodWe ESA in Perth
Two rebates apply, and the WA scheme sits on top of the federal discount.
- Federal discount: applied up front through STCs. From 1 May 2026 it is tiered: full value on the first 14 kWh of usable capacity, 60% from 14 to 28 kWh, and 15% from 28 to 50 kWh. The subsidy steps down every six months and the program ends on 31 Dec 2030. Your install date, not your contract date, sets the rate.
- WA Residential Battery Scheme: for Synergy customers, the rebate scales with usable capacity between 5 and 10 kWh (about $130 per usable kWh, so $650 at 5 kWh up to $1,300 at 10 kWh); any battery above 10 kWh usable receives the maximum. You must join a Virtual Power Plant program with Synergy or Horizon Power.
- Synergy Supported Solutions List: the ESA series is listed, which is the eligibility step the WA scheme relies on.
What installation involves
We start with a site visit. We inspect your existing solar (if any), the switchboard and the space where the ESA will sit, and we talk through how your household uses power so we can size the stack sensibly. The switchboard check matters: its condition, available space and distance from the proposed location can all change the scope, and any upgrade is quoted up front rather than discovered on install day. We also confirm whether a hybrid or AC-coupled ESA is the right fit based on your existing inverter and your backup scope.
Before install, we lodge the network application with Western Power and Synergy. On the day, the technicians mount the unit in a shaded, ventilated position, fit isolators, run the cabling and connect the backup circuits you’ve chosen. We commission to AS/NZS 5139, configure charge and discharge settings, and set up the monitoring.
Before we leave, we walk you through the app so you can read the battery state of charge, solar generation and household usage. One practical tip: run a LAN cable to the unit if the site allows it, because a wired connection is more reliable than Wi-Fi over the long term.
Things to know before you buy
Pros
All-in-one IP66 cabinet with the inverter and battery pre-wired, so there’s less wall space used and fewer separate components to fail.
Whole-home backup is built in: up to 63 A on single-phase and an 80 A bypass on three-phase, with switchover under 4 ms.
Flexible sizing: mix 5 and 8 kWh modules in a single-phase stack up to 54 kWh, or go up to 108 kWh on three-phase with four module sizes.
10-year warranty on both the inverter system and the battery, with a guaranteed throughput of 3.0 MWh per usable kWh.
GoodWe has had a long presence in the Australian market, which owners and reviewers commonly note as a point in its favour.
Things to consider
Connectivity reliability is the most common owner complaint. The most reported issue is the Wi-Fi dongle dropping the internet connection, which breaks live monitoring. We set up the LAN connection where the site allows it and show you how to check the data link in the app before we leave.
Service experience depends on the installer. Owners have reported slow responses from the manufacturer’s service desk, including reluctance to replace a dongle under warranty. We handle warranty claims on your behalf and keep your commissioning records on file to speed that process.
Installer choice matters more than the brand on the box. The ESA is sold through a wide range of retailers, including very cheap ones. A battery is only as reliable as the switchboard work, the backup wiring and the commissioning behind it, which is why we spend time at the quote stage checking the switchboard and planning the backup circuits.
Older GoodWe batteries are not the ESA. If you’ve read mixed reviews of earlier GoodWe batteries, the ESA is a newer platform that reviewers single out as the one to consider; make sure any quote you compare specifies the ESA series, not the older Lynx-only setup.
GoodWe ESA questions Perth homeowners ask
Is the GoodWe ESA available in a 3-phase model?
Yes. The three-phase ESA covers rated AC power from 5 kW to 29.999 kW across nine power modules, with up to 12 battery modules per stack for a total of 108 kWh. A three-phase home with a larger solar array or EV charging usually needs this version.
What size battery can I build with the GoodWe ESA?
On the single-phase ESA you can mix 5 kWh and 8 kWh modules in a single stack up to 54 kWh, with up to 6 stacks in parallel. The three-phase ESA offers four module sizes (5, 6, 8 and 9 kWh) and up to 12 modules per stack for 108 kWh.
Does the GoodWe ESA provide whole-home backup?
Yes. The single-phase ESA delivers UPS-level whole-home backup at up to 63 A with no separate gateway required. The three-phase ESA uses a dual-port design for whole-home backup with up to 200% AC backup overload and an 80 A bypass pass-through. Switchover is under 4 ms.
What is the GoodWe ESA warranty?
The inverter system carries a 10-year limited warranty on both the single-phase and three-phase ESA. The battery modules have a 10-year product warranty and a 10-year performance warranty, with a minimum guaranteed throughput of 3.0 MWh per usable kWh.
Can the GoodWe ESA be added to an existing solar system?
Yes. GoodWe makes an AC-coupled version of the ESA in single-phase (3 to 9.999 kW) and three-phase (5 to 29.999 kW). The AC-coupled unit sits alongside your existing inverter and still delivers whole-home backup with switchover under 4 ms.
Does the GoodWe ESA connect to Wi-Fi?
Yes. Communication includes RS485, Wi-Fi, LAN and Bluetooth, with optional 4G and Bluetooth.
