How the GoodWe HCA G2 works
The HCA G2 is an AC wall charger with a tethered 7.5 m cable and a Type 2 plug. It converts the AC supply from your switchboard into the current your car’s onboard charger uses. There are three models: a single-phase 7kW (GW7K-HCA-20) and three-phase 11kW and 22kW units (GW11K-HCA-20 and GW22K-HCA-20). The 7kW delivers 32 A on one phase, the 11kW delivers 16 A on each of three phases, and the 22kW delivers 32 A on each of three phases.
You start a charge from the GoodWe SEMS+ app, by tapping an RFID card, or by just plugging in with AUTO Start. Three working modes shape how it charges: PV Priority uses excess solar first, Scheduled Charging runs on a timer, and Dynamic Load Control limits draw so the main supply isn’t overloaded. Smart phase switching lets a three-phase unit follow the solar as it rises and falls through the day.

Which model suits your home
Start at the switchboard.
If your home has three-phase power, you have a choice. The 11kW GW11K-HCA-20 draws 16 A per phase and roughly halves the charging time of the 7kW. The 22kW GW22K-HCA-20 draws 32 A per phase and roughly quarters it, provided your car’s onboard AC charger can accept 22 kW. Many EVs cap AC charging at 7 or 11 kW, so there’s no point paying for the 22kW unless your car (or your next car) can use it, or you want faster top-ups between day trips.
For most families the 7kW is enough; the three-phase models are worth the extra install cost when the car can use the speed, or when solar is the main source and you want to catch a sunny afternoon rather than a long overnight window.

What installation involves
We start with a site visit. We check whether your home is single or three phase, look at the switchboard condition and spare space, and agree where the charger goes and how the cable will run from the board. If a switchboard upgrade is needed to add the sub-circuit, external Type A RCD and emergency shutdown switch, we quote that at the same time. Where the charger talks to your solar through SEMS, we also check the inverter and the Wi-Fi signal at the install location.
Before install day we lodge the connection notification with Western Power (or Horizon Power on country networks). On the day the technicians mount the unit on the wall or an optional stand, install the isolator, RCD and emergency shutdown, run the cable, and commission the charger to AS/NZS 3000. We set up the SEMS+ app with you, pair an RFID card if you want one, and walk through the three working modes so you can pick the one that suits your routine.
One practical tip: decide early whether the charger goes inside the garage or on an external wall, as it changes the cable run and the reach of the 7.5 m lead to where you park.
Things to know before you buy
Pros
Three model choices cover single-phase and three-phase homes, with output up to 22 kW.
Charges from excess solar automatically with PV Priority mode, or from the grid when you need a faster top-up.
Smart phase switching keeps charging going as your solar output rises and falls through the day.
Multiple start methods, so you can start a session from the SEMS+ app, with an RFID card or by just plugging in.
Works with any brand of EV that uses the Type 2 connector.
Things to consider
GoodWe lists a 2 year limited warranty for the HCA EV charger range.
An external Type A RCD is required. The charger has its own 30 mA AC and 6 mA DC residual current protection built in, but an external Type A RCD must still be fitted at the switchboard. We include it in the install, and it’s one of the reasons the sub-circuit has to be sized and protected by a licensed electrician.
An emergency shutdown switch is part of the install. An external emergency shutdown switch is required, mounted where you can reach it quickly. We agree the location at the site visit so it’s accessible but not in the way.
Solar charging modes only work if the rest of the setup supports them. PV Priority and Dynamic Load Control rely on the charger seeing your solar generation and household load through SEMS. If your solar inverter isn’t a GoodWe or isn’t on the same monitoring, you can still charge the car, but the smart solar modes may not work the way they’re described.
Keep it connected to Wi-Fi. App control, scheduling and solar-aware charging all rely on the charger staying online over Wi-Fi or Bluetooth. If the signal at the install location is weak, let us know at the site visit so we can plan for a mesh node or a wired option.
GoodWe EV charger questions Perth homeowners ask
What kW should my EV charger be?
For most homes a 7kW single-phase charger adds roughly a full day’s driving overnight, which is plenty.
Which home charger is better for my EV, a 7kW or an 11kW?
The 7kW is single-phase at 32 A, the 11kW is three-phase at 16 A per phase. If your home only has single-phase power, the 7kW is your only option. In a three-phase home the 11kW charges faster, and the 22kW faster again, provided your car’s onboard charger can accept that rate.
Should I charge my EV to 100% every night?
The GoodWe SEMS+ app lets you schedule charging and set working modes, so you can automate this rather than remember to unplug.
Is 6mm cable ok for 7kW EV charger?
Cable sizing is set by the electrician against AS/NZS 3000 and depends on the circuit length, the installation method and the protective device, not just the charger rating. The HCA G2 7kW draws 32 A continuous, and an external Type A RCD is required, so we size the final sub-circuit on the day based on your switchboard and run.
Can I leave my EV charger plugged in all the time?
Yes. With PV Priority or Scheduled Charging modes set in the app, the charger decides when to start and stop, so you can leave the plug in and only draw power when you want it to. The connector is rated IP55 so it handles outdoor use.
Can I install a level 2 EV charger myself?
No. In Western Australia the sub-circuit, isolator, RCD and connection must be installed by a licensed electrician, and the install needs to meet AS/NZS 3000 and the network’s requirements. The HCA G2 also needs an external Type A RCD and an external emergency shutdown switch, which are part of the fixed wiring.
