GoodWe Inverter: Hybrid and Grid-Tied Models, 5kW to 10kW

GoodWe makes grid-tied inverters (the single-phase DNS G4 and MS G4, and the three-phase SDT G2 and SDT G3) and hybrid inverters that work with a battery (the single-phase EH and EHB, and the three-phase ET and ET G2), plus the SBP G2 for retrofitting a battery to an existing solar system. The first decision is whether your home is single-phase or three-phase, which is set by your supply and confirmed at the site visit; the second is whether you want solar only, solar with a battery now, or solar now and a battery later.

This page walks through the sizing within each family, the 10-year warranty conditions, backup during a blackout, and the smart meter options so you can decide which GoodWe inverter suits your home.

How the GoodWe inverter range works

Grid-tied inverters (DNS G4 and MS G4 for single-phase, SDT G2 and SDT G3 for three-phase) convert your solar panels into AC and feed the house and the grid. Hybrid inverters (EH, EHB, ET and the three-phase ET G2) do the same job but also talk to a battery, so you can store surplus solar for the evening and use it when the grid goes down. The SBP G2 is a different animal again: an AC-coupled battery inverter that retrofits a battery to a home that already has a working solar system.

On the hybrid side, the single-phase EHB covers 5000 to 9990 W and pairs with GoodWe’s own Lynx F and Lynx F G2 batteries. The three-phase ET G2 runs from 6 to 15 kW with backup apparent power up to 15000 VA. Both switch to battery backup in under 10 milliseconds when the grid drops out. The EH is the battery-ready option: a smaller single-phase hybrid (3.6 to 6 kW) for homes that want solar now and a battery later.

Which GoodWe inverter suits your home

The first fork in the road is single-phase or three-phase, and that’s set by your supply. We check this at the site visit.

Both accept up to 200% PV oversizing, so a 6 kW inverter can run under a 12 kW array with the extra clipped at the peak. If you’re adding a 6.6 kW array to a single-phase home, the DNS G4 at 5000 or 6000 W is the usual match.

Three-phase, solar only. The SDT G2 covers 5 to 20 kW and the SDT G3 scales to about 30 kW of panels on the larger models. A three-phase home with a 10 kW array typically runs an SDT G3 10 kW.

Battery now or later. If a battery is on the plan, choose a hybrid. For single-phase, the EHB handles 5000 to 9990 W and talks to the GoodWe Lynx F and Lynx F G2. For three-phase, the ET G2 (6 to 15 kW) is the main hybrid, with 10-year warranty on current models. If you want solar now and a battery later and you’re single-phase, the EH is the smaller, battery-ready option.

Retrofit to an existing system. If your solar is already up and still working, the SBP G2 adds a battery without replacing the solar inverter and works alongside both single-phase and three-phase systems.

For example, a single-phase Perth home using around 25 kWh a day with a 10 kW array and plans to add a battery would usually run a GW9.99K-EHB with a Lynx F G2 stack; the same home without a battery in mind would run an MS G4 at 9999 W.

GoodWe inverter sizes and models

DNS G4 (single-phase, grid-tied)

3000, 3600, 4200, 5000 and 6000 W nominal output. Suits single-phase homes with solar arrays up to about 12 kW thanks to 200% PV oversizing.

MS G4 (single-phase, grid-tied)

7500, 8500 and 9999 W nominal output. For larger single-phase homes with 10 kW+ arrays.

SDT G2 (three-phase, grid-tied)

5000, 6000, 8000, 9990, 10000, 15000 and 20000 W nominal.

SDT G3 (three-phase, grid-tied)

Accepts up to 7.5 to 45 kW of PV input depending on model.

EH (single-phase, battery-ready hybrid)

GW3600-EH, GW5000-EH and GW6000-EH, plus N variants. Solar now, add a battery later.

EHB (single-phase hybrid, 5-10 kW)

GW5K-EHB, GW8.6K-EHB and GW9.99K-EHB, with actual outputs of 5000, 8600 and 9990 W. Note the model name does not match the rated power. Pairs with GoodWe Lynx F and Lynx F G2 batteries.

ET 5-10 kW (three-phase hybrid)

GW5K-ET, GW6.5K-ET, GW8K-ET and GW10K-ET. Under 10 ms backup switchover.

ET G2 (three-phase hybrid, 6-15 kW)

GW6000-ET-20 to GW15K-ET-20, with backup apparent power from 6000 to 15000 VA. 10-year warranty.

SBP G2 (AC-coupled battery retrofit)

GW3600-SBP-20, GW5000-SBP-20 and GW6000-SBP-20. Adds a battery to an existing single- or three-phase solar system.

What installation involves

We start with a site visit. We check your switchboard, confirm whether you’re single-phase or three-phase and look at where the inverter can go: a shaded, ventilated wall out of direct afternoon sun. If a battery is going in now or later, we also agree where it sits and which circuits you want backed up: usually the fridge, some lights and a power circuit, or the whole house if you want a transfer switch to handle it. Before the install we lodge the connection application with Western Power and Synergy.

On the day, the technicians mount the inverter, run the DC and AC cabling, fit isolators and commission to the relevant Australian standards, including AS/NZS 5139 where a battery is part of the system. We register the inverter on the SEMS portal at commissioning, which is one of the conditions for the 10-year warranty on current on-grid models.

Before we leave, we set up the SEMS app on your phone and walk you through solar generation, household usage and (if you have one) battery charge level. A practical tip: keep your Wi-Fi router within reasonable range of the inverter dongle, because dropouts are the most common complaint we hear with GoodWe.

Things to know before you buy

Pros

Wide range: single-phase and three-phase, grid-tied and hybrid, 3 kW up to about 20 kW, so it’s possible to match the inverter to the house rather than the other way around.

Hybrid models (ET and EHB) switch to backup in under 10 milliseconds, which is fast enough that most appliances don’t notice the outage.

Current on-grid models carry a 10-year warranty if they’re registered on the SEMS portal and were manufactured after 1 July 2020.

DNS G4 and MS G4 are IP66 rated and accept up to 200% PV oversizing, which gives useful flexibility when the panel array is larger than the inverter.

Things to consider

Recorded recall on the MS G3. On 29 February 2024, GoodWe published a recall covering MS G3 single-phase inverters in the 5-10 kW range, with free on-site rectification. If you have an older MS G3, check the serial number with GoodWe or your installer. On any new install, the quality of the AC termination is what matters, which is why we commission to AS/NZS and leave the paperwork with you.

The manufacturer remedy is the authoritative fix; owners of affected units should arrange it through their installer.

Wi-Fi dongle can drop out, and service can be slow. The most common owner complaint we see is the dongle losing connection, with the service desk sometimes reluctant to replace it under warranty. Because SEMS registration is a warranty condition, we register the inverter at commissioning and recommend keeping the router within reasonable range of the dongle.

The 10-year warranty is conditional. It applies only to inverters manufactured after 1 July 2020 and registered on the SEMS portal after 1 January 2021, and claims must be made within one month of the failure date. The 5-10 kW ET hybrid and the DNS G4 and MS G4 are listed under a 5-year warranty. Confirm the warranty on the exact model at quote stage.

Model names don’t equal rated power on the EHB. GoodWe notes that the EHB model name does not represent the rated power: the GW5K-EHB puts out 5000 W, the GW8.6K-EHB puts out 8600 W and the GW9.99K-EHB puts out 9990 W. If you’re matching the inverter to export limits or a battery, size by the actual output, not the model name.
